Newcastle Morning Herald & Miner's Advocate, Monday 8 November 1920.6,7 - Obituary*: The obituary for Alexander Frew reads: "The funeral of the late Mr Alexander Frew proceeded from the Carrington Hotel, of which he was the licensee, on Monday afternoon for the Presbyterian Cemetery, Wallsend. Members of Lodge St James, No. 45, preceded the hearse. The pall-bearers were Brothers H. Roxby, R. Armstrong, W. Cowcher and J. Marshall. The Rev. W A Burns officiated at the grave, where also the Masonic ritual was recited by Bro. J. Bower. Mr Frew, who was 73 years of age, was a native of Scotland, and arrived in Wallsend district when 29 years of age. He was employed as a coal miner for a short time, and then became licensee of Tattersall's Hotel, which stood in Devon St. He afterwards was licensee of the Great Northern and the old Victoria (Wallsend), and subsequently opened the Rhondda Hotel, which was conducted by him for 18 years. About three years ago he took over the Carrington Hotel, Wallsend. He had served as a committeeman of Wallsend Jockey Club for 27 years. He was for half a century a Mason, being one of the oldest members of Lodge St James, No. 45, Wallsend. Deceased had been ailing for two years, and about a fortnight ago had a fall, by which he sustained a broken thigh. He is survived by a widow, four sons and seven daughters. The family received many letters, telegrams, and cards expressing sympathy, and floral tributes were forwarded by the daughters and sons, Mr and Mrs R. Frew, the committee and members of the Wallsend Jockey Club, Lodge St James No. 45, the NSW Aerated Water Co., Mr and Mrs W. M. Abel, Mr and Mrs F. P. Wilkinson, Mr and Mrs J. M. Limeburner, the boys at Dobell's, Mr and Mrs G. Hopkinson, Mr and Mrs D. Connelly, Mr and Mrs R. Hetherington, Mr and Mrs D. McDeod."
