J. H. Bettington1

M, #5272
  • (Mentioned) Newspaper: J. H. was mentioned in the The Sydney Morning Herald on 15 March 1917:
    "DEATH OF MR. ROBERT SMITH.
The death occurred in a private hospital early yesterday morning, at the age of 71 years, of Mr. Robert Smith, a well-known city solicitor and senior member of the firm of Norton, Smith, and Co., of O'Connell-street.
Mr. Smith had been in indifferent health for some time, suffering from heart trouble, but it was not until about two weeks ago that his condition was regarded as serious. He was twice married, and by his first wife, a daughter of the late Captain Fullerton, of Watson's Bay, he had one daughter, now wife of Dr. Orr, of Melbourne. His second wife, a daughter of the late Mr. J. H. Bettington, of England, survives him, and is now in Eng- land. By her he had three sons and one daughter-namely, Mr. Ulric Smith, an engi- neer of Coventry, England; Captain Yoric Smith, of the 66th Punjabis, India, who acted as military censor in Mesopotamia, and re- cently returned to India after visiting Aus- tralia on sick leave; Corporal Ivan Smith, of the Royal Engineers, now serving in France; and Mrs. Mitchell, of England.
The funeral will leave St. Stephen's Church, Phillip-street, city, at 9.30 o'clock this morn- ing for the Field of Mars Cemetery, Ryde.
The late Mr. Robert Smith was one of the leading mercantile solicitors of the city, and founded the present firm of Norton, Smith, and Co., which he conducted as the most active member up to the time of his death. Mr. Norton was subsequently appointed to the Legislative Council, and became Postmaster-General In the Stuart Ministry.
Mr. Smith was appointed solicitor for the University, which office he retained up to his death. He acted for several years as Crown Solicitor during the illness and for some time after the death of Mr. John Williams, who held that office, and he also acted as solicitor to the Railway Commissioner during the time of the late Mr. Eddy, and was specially in- structed to conduct several important rail way cases, notably the celebrated Proudfoot case.
As an active and enthusiastic golfer Mr. Smith was a prominent figure, occupying the presidential chairs of both the Hunter's Hill and the University golf clubs at different periods. At one time ho took an active in- terest in municipal affairs, and for a number of years was Mayor of Hunter's Hill, where his late residence, Lyndcourt, was situated. Many years ago he was a member of the Sydney School of Arts Debating Club, together with Sir George Reid, Sir Wm. M'Millan, and others. He was a man of the hlghest charac- ter and reputation, and was held in the great- est esteem by the members of his profession and by all who knew him. He was born in the year 1845 at Kyeamba, on the Murrum- bidgee, his father, the late Mr. John Smith, being; a very early colonist.
The deceased received his primary education at home, and then proceeded to Sydney Uni- versity, taking the degree of B.A. in the year 1864. At the University he was contemporary with the present Chief Justice of the High Court (Sir Samuel Griffith), Mr. Justice Hey- don, the late Mr. C. E. Pilcher. K.C., and the late Mr. J. H. Want, K.C. In due cource he took the degree of M.A., and on leaving the University he entered the ofilce of his brother, the late Captain Charles Smith, whose firm was known as McDonald, Smith, and Co., of Hunter-street, the successors of Salter and Co. Later he entered the office of Roxburgh, Slade, and Spain, and was articled to the late Mr. G. P. Slade, and after the breaking up of that firm he joined Mr. Slade in partnership, carrying on business for a number of years as Slade and Smith. In the year 1879, after Mr. Slade's retirement and departure for Eng- land, Mr. Smith joined the late Mr. James Norton, who was then carrying on business in Elizabeth-street. In the 'Seventies Mr. Smith was recognised as the strongest chess player in New South Wales, and took an active part in the management of the Chess Association."1

Hugh Bell1,2

M, #5276, d. 22 December 1897
  • Name Variation: As of 12 July 1867, Hugh Bell was also known as Dr Hugh Bell.4
  • (Mentioned) Newspaper: Hugh was mentioned in the The Brisbane Courier on 8 September 1896:
    "SUCCESSES OF A BRISBANE "BOY."
A correspondent sends us the following extract from the "Guy's Hospital Gazette" of 4th July 1896, referring to Mr. H. T. S. Bell, a son of Dr. Hugh Bell, and a well-known Brisbane "boy," who has been splendidly upholding the credit of his native place both in the hospital and in the athletic fields. The authority mentioned says :—Hugh Thomas Symes Bell is an Australian, and entered Guy's as a first year's man in May, 1891, and no greater praise can be written than in stating that he has been as successful in his examinations as he has been in the field of athletics. He passed the second Conjoint examination in March, 1893, the Primary Fellowship examination in May, 1894, and all parts of the final Conjoint examination in January, 1896. He clerked to Drs. Goodhart and Hale White, and dressed to Messrs. Lane and Lucas (six months), and has also held the appointments of anaesthetic clerk and clinical assistant. Mr. Bell has played well and often in the Rugby football team, but his most magnificent performances are those in athletic sports. In the book of races at the U.H.A.C. sports last week, we noticed that he held the hospital's record for 220 yards (22 3/5sec.) and high jump (5ft. 8in.), and that he had taken prizes in four successive years at the sports, his best performance at 100 yards being 10 2/5sec, and in the long jump 20ft. 7in."5
  • Newspaper*: He was mentioned in the The Brisbane Courier on 23 December 1897:
    "DEATH OF DR. BELL.
    ANOTHER OLD BRISBANEITE.
Old residents of Brisbane will hear with deep regret of the death of Dr. Hugh Bell, which occurred at his residence at Milton yesterday morning at 4 o'clock. The deceased gentleman was in his 69th year, and had been a resident of the colony since 1865. He had attained to some of the highest honours of his profession, having been made a member of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1842, a Fellow by examination in 1846, and an M.D. of the London University in 1847. The date of deceased's registration does not appear in the Queensland register, it having taken place before the separation; but of the original names which appeared in it his was one of the last two, Dr. W. Armstrong, of Toowoomba, being the only living survivor.
Dr. Bell was appointed house surgeon of the Brisbane Hospital when that institution stood near the site of the Supreme Court in George-street, in which position he succeeded the late Dr. F. J. Barton, and he was also a member of the first Queensland Medical Board, his colleagues—Drs. Geo. Fullerton (president), Wm. Hobbs, F. J. Barton, and A. Kemball (secretary)—having all predeceased him. Deceased was one of the first honorary consulting medical officers of the Children's Hospital, where his only son now fills the position of resident medical officer ; and at the time of his death was on the honorary consulting staff of the Brisbane Hospital. At one time Dr. Bell took a great interest in sanitary matters, and was the patentee of a sanitary appliance. Before the appointment of a health officer Dr. Bell did good and useful work in visiting any disease-infected vessels which entered the Bay.
The deceased gentleman's first wife lost her life in the Fiery Star, a vessel which was burned at sea many years ago on a voyage to England. He afterwards married the relict of Dr. Barton. For some years prior to his death Dr. Bell had retired from active practice, but before his retirement he was an energetic worker, and a most careful and capable surgeon and physician. Deceased was attended during his last illness by Dr. P. Bancroft, and the cause of death was pneumonia, induced by bronchitis, from which latter complaint he had been suffering for some time past. The funeral took place at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon."3
  • (Mentioned) Newspaper: H. T. was mentioned in the The Sydney Morning Herald on 26 July 1921:
    "OBITUARY.
    DR. H. T. BELL.
The funeral took place yesterday at Waverley Cemetery of Dr. Hugh Thomas Bell, of Glover-street, Mosman, whose death occurred on Saturday at a private hospital. Dr. Bell was the only son of the late Dr. H. T. Bell, of Brisbane, and practised for 16 years at Murwillumbah. He married the widow of the late Mr. Walter White, of Dallandene station, Queensland. She is a daughter of the late Mr. Bishop Lyne, of Narrabri, brother of the late Sir William Lyne.
Dr. Bell leaves a widow, a son, and two daughters."2
  • Name Variation: As of 26 July 1921, Hugh Bell was also known as Dr H. T. Bell.2
  • Residence*: He lived on 26 July 1921 at Brisbane, QLD, AUS.2
